Fishing Report 17 May

Today’s Gulf setup about 10 nautical miles south of Destin/East Pass is looking very fishable. The NOAA/NWS marine forecast for the Destin-to-Pensacola nearshore waters calls for southeast winds around 5 knots, increasing to 5–10 knots late this morning and afternoon, with seas 1 foot or less and wave detail around southeast 1 foot at 3 seconds.

Beach conditions are favorable too: low surf around 1 foot, light wind, mostly sunny skies, and a very high UV setup. The water is running in the mid-70s, with current Destin-area sea temperature reported around 74–75°F.

The local bite is still a strong May mix. Half Hitch’s latest Destin report has pompano and Spanish mackerel making up the bulk of pier action, with bait around and the king bite expected to improve; jack crevalle were also caught.   Okaloosa Island Pier’s recent report listed Spanish mackerel and pompano, while Navarre-area snippets show Spanish mackerel, hardtails, cigar minnows, bonita, pompano, ladyfish, and alewives.

FishingBooker’s fresh Okaloosa Island reports show red grouper, mingo/vermilion snapper, and amberjack action on recent trips, including a May 14 Sea 4 Ventures report noting topwater AJ action.

Good plan today: fish early, troll the beach, work the pass edges, or run nearshore while the Gulf is behaving. Keep an eye on the afternoon sea breeze and bring sunscreen.
